Online face morphing.

Posted by indigohjones on April 28, 2007

Two links for you today. First up, we’ve got The St. Andrews University Face Transformer , a nifty Java app that will let you upload any face you want from your computer and then morphs its physiology, shifting its age, gender and even ethnicity.

Here’s a feminised Brad Pitt, for example.

Before.After.

The program is easy to use, and quick. Here’s a full list of the morphs available – baby, child, teenage, young adult, older adult, Afro-Carribean, Caucasian, East Asian, West Asian, Feminisation; then we have three art-style morphs, changing faces into the portrait styles of Modigliani, Botticelli and El Greco. You can also see your face in the style of a Manga Cartoon, an Apeman, or even drunk.

The great strength of this program is the attention it takes to detail. Look at the shimmer given to Brad’s eyes; the thinning of the eyebrows; the rouging of his lips.

Secondly, here’s Symface for you. It works similarly to the Transformer. You upload a photo, choose the centre-line of the face, and it’ll show you what the face would look like if it was absolutely symmetrical. Here’s Brad to show you what I mean.

 Happy morphing, everybody.

Skiing ostriches. Whatever next?

Posted by indigohjones on April 25, 2007

Although hilarious, the footage is not actually of real ostriches, but a CG composite. It’s an advertisement for the East Japan Railway Company, the largest passenger railway company on the face of the Earth, according to Wikipedia. These ran in 2005-2006 as a promotion for their package skiing holidays.

Why an ostrich? Apart from being hilarious, there is, of course, the concept of ostrich and ostrich-ness. Or maybe ostrichosity? Taken from patrick.com, here’s what the EJRC had to say:

Q. Why, it is the ostrich?

A. Skiing CM of this year aimed toward the revival of the snow leisure movement, aimed toward CM where there is an kind of impact which in many ones you can make topic. Because of this, the origin change of the person who, “did skiing in the main character and applies why? “With, it seems that unintentionally can have doubt there was a” unexpected characteristic “, the very thing was unique and it has pleasant image, we had decided to appoint the ostrich.

“Appoint the ostrich”. That’s got a good ring to it.

Leon’s Random Joke Generator.

Posted by indigohjones on April 24, 2007

From Leon Atkinson’s website, this app will generate you a random (and emphasis on the random) joke for you. As the website itself says:

“This generator returns a joke. Many of them are based on classic joke forms, but offer a new twist. Share them with your friends! They will enjoy it! Really!”

Here’s a sample joke that was produced especially for me:

LITTLE MISS IMPERIOUS WALKS INTO A BAR. THE BARTENDER SAYS “DO YOU KNOW YOU HAVE PIE IN YOUR GO-GO?” “YEAH,” LITTLE MISS IMPERIOUS SAYS, “IT DATES MY BREWMASTER… “

I can’t help but be reminded of Jokes from the Booster Seat , a collection of mostly nonsensical but nevertheless hilarious (non-)jokes written by the four year old son of Steve, owner of blog/zine The Sneeze. My personal favourite? Highlight to reveal the punchline.

Q: “What did the watermelon say to the giraffe?”

A: “Dale, I’m going to jail!

The Suicide Foods Blog.

Suicide Foods

The Suicide Foods Blog has a collection of food advertisements where animals are shown either in eager anticipation of being dinner, or actually going so far as to prepare themselves as a meal. Along with these images you’ll find witty commentary and a wonderfully morbid image ranking system, ranging from one noose (“mildly troubling”) to five nooses (“Ye gods! I must go wash out my eyeballs!”). Have a look and consider how downright bizarre advertising can be.

Songs in the key of NES, part 1.

Posted by indigohjones on April 15, 2007

Who doesn’t love a touch of 8-bit musical nostalgia? I’ve recently tried my hand at remaking or remixing a few songs as they might sound if played by a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) or SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) . These were produced with a copy of Fruity Loops and the peach, toad and triforce VST plugins from Tweakbench, as well as MIDI files from around the net. More to come in the following days and months, so keep those eyes peeled. Or a less painful method would be to subscribe to my feed. Without further ado, I present:

The Beatles – Hey Bulldog

The Offspring – Why Don’t You Get a Job

The Offspring -Pretty Fly for a White Guy

The Peanuts Theme Tune

edit – new song added:

Frank Sinatra – My Way

Radiohead – Karma Police

Any requests? Leave a comment with the song you’d like me to do in it. I request also that you check out this post here, which has all the fulfilled requests so far.

Trumpeter Landfrey sounds the charge of the Light Brigade.

Posted by indigohjones on April 13, 2007

Fenton Light Brigade.

Trumpeteer Landfrey was one of the surviving trumpeters from the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava on the 25th of October, 1854. In this recording from the year 1890, he sounds the same charge as he did on that fateful day, with a bugle that itself was becoming part of history at the time, as it had been used at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Listen to the fascinating and all too short wax cylinder recording here in mp3 format.

Pet_00 Interactive web music-maker.

Posted by indigohjones on April 13, 2007

“PET_00 compositions are made from three types of basic elements: particles, attractors and triggers. Particles have audio samples linked to them. They move across the screen and when they cross a trigger area the sound is played. The movement of the particles can be influenced by the attractors.” Mouseover the bottom of the window for a menu. The thing of interest here is the constructive/generative interface whereby you construct from “particles, attractors and triggers”.
